Theni District 4-Falls Itinerary: 2 Nights / 3 Days

Day 1: The South-Western Falls & Caves
Time Activity Description
Morning Arrival & Travel to Suruli Falls Arrive in Theni and check into your accommodation near Cumbum or Gudalur. Head straight for Suruli Falls (approx. 56 km from Theni town).
Late Morning Suruli Falls & Bath Spend quality time at the majestic Suruli Falls. Enjoy a refreshing bath in the two-tiered cascades. This is the largest and most famous waterfall in the district.
Lunch Local Lunch Have lunch near Cumbum or Suruli. Try some authentic local cuisine.
Afternoon Kailasanathar Cave Temple Visit the ancient Kailasanathar Cave Temple, located about 800 meters above Suruli Falls, to soak in the spiritual and historical ambiance.
Late Afternoon Kurangani Falls/Trek Drive towards the Kurangani village area. Kurangani is a popular trekking base. Visit the local stream/falls area near the village. (Note: Trekking in this region often requires forest department permission and may be restricted. Check locally.)
Night Overnight near Cumbum/Gudalur Dinner and rest.


Day 2: Foothills of Kodaikanal & Rat Tail View

Morning Travel to Kumbakkarai Falls Check out and drive to Kumbakkarai Falls (approx. 32 km from Theni, near Periyakulam).
Late Morning Kumbakkarai Falls Enjoy the unique experience at Kumbakkarai Falls, where the water collects in rock recesses named after animals. It’s a serene spot at the foothills of the Kodaikanal Hills.
Lunch Periyakulam Lunch Have lunch in the historic and agricultural town of Periyakulam, often referred to as the ‘Mango City’.
Afternoon Thalaiyar Falls Viewpoint (Rat Tail Falls) Drive towards the Batalugundu-Kodaikanal Ghat Road. From the Dum Dum Rock Viewpoint, you can get a spectacular panoramic view of Thalaiyar Falls (also known as Rat Tail Falls), which is the highest waterfall in Tamil Nadu, visible across the valley. (It is generally inaccessible for bathing/trekking from the Theni side).
Evening Sothupparai Dam & Theni Town Visit the scenic Sothupparai Dam near Periyakulam. Afterwards, check into your accommodation in Theni town.
Night Overnight in Theni Dinner and leisure time in Theni town.


Day 3: Cloudland Falls & Departure
Time Activity Description
Morning Travel to Chinna Suruli Drive to Chinna Suruli Falls (approx. 54 km from Theni, near Kombaithozhu village).
Late Morning Chinna Suruli Falls (Cloudland Falls) Enjoy this peaceful, seasonal cascade that originates in the Meghamalai hills. It’s an excellent spot for nature photography and is less crowded than Suruli Falls.
Lunch Final Meal & Local Shopping Have your last meal and spend some time exploring a local market near Theni or on the way to your departure point for local produce and souvenirs.
Afternoon Vaigai Dam (Optional Stop) If time permits and it is on your route, stop at the Vaigai Dam to view the massive structure and its garden.
Evening Departure Head to the nearest major hub (Theni Railway/Bus Station or Madurai Airport/Railway Station) for your onward journey.
