The Vaigai River basin covers an area of about 7009.13 sq. kms (wikki info) is considered as a sacred water body, worshiped much like the River Ganges in the North. Vaigai River also serves as a lifeline for the agriculture in several districts including Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Sivagangai and Ramanathapuram for irrigation purposes. The birth of the river is in the Varusanadu Hills of Dindigul District. The river holds cultural and religious significance. The river holds the cultural references in the state literature like Thiruvilayadal Puranam, Sangam literature for its historical significance.
